On October 30th, 1938, the United States experienced mass hysteria--most pronounced on the east coast in New York and New Jersey--in response to a radio broadcast put on by Orson Welles and his Mercury Theater On The Air.

Larry Niven
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Laurence van Cott Niven (born April 30, 1938) is a US science fiction author. Perhaps his best-known work is Ringworld (1970), which received Hugo, Locus and Nebula awards.

Niven is the author of numerous science fiction short stories and novels, beginning with his 1964 story "The Coldest Place" (which in the story was said to be the dark side of Mercury, which was thought to be tidally locked with the Sun at the time it was written but which ironically enough was found to rotate in a 2:3 resonance just months before the story was published).

Niven has also written scripts for various science fiction television shows, including the original Land of the Lost series and Star Trek: The Animated Series. One of his short stories, "Inconstant Moon", was adapted for an episode of the series The Outer Limits.

A thinly disguised Niven appears as the character "Lawrence Van Cott" in the Greg Bear novel The Forge of God.

Many of Niven's stories take place in his Known Space universe, in which humanity shares the several solar systems nearest to Sol with over a dozen alien species, including species known as the Kzinti, and Pierson's Puppeteers, which are frequently central characters. The Ringworld trilogy is set in the Known Space universe.

In recent years, most of his writing has been in collaboration with Jerry Pournelle and/or Steven Barnes.

There are those who think that Niven numbers may have been named in his honor, but despite his popularity and mathematical background, they're actually named for Ivan M Niven.

Hard Sci Fi is Sci Fi which the science is given more prominence than the fiction: lots of lovingly intricate and scientifically sound descriptions of rockets, robots, alien planets, exotic physics and so on, but often rather two-dimensional characters and stilted plots.

inceputul cartzii the restaurant at the end of the universe:

Introduction
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

Another Introduction
There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Many races believe that it was created by some sort of God, though the Jatravartid people of Viltvodle VI believe that the entire Universe was in fact sneezed out of the nose of a being called the Great Green Arkleseizure.

The Jatravartids, who live in perpetual fear of the time they call The Coming of The Great White Handkerchief, are small blue creatures with more than fifty arms each, who are therefore unique in being the only race in history to have invented the aerosol deodorant before the wheel.

However, the Great Green Arkleseizure Theory is not widely accepted outside Viltvodle VI and so, the Universe being the puzzling place it is, other explanations are constantly being sought.

For instance, a race of hyperintelligent pan-dimensional beings once built themselves a gigantic supercomputer called Deep Thought to calculate once and for all the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

For seven and a half million years, Deep Thought computed and calculated, and in the end announced that the answer was in fact Forty-two - and so another, even bigger, computer had to be built to find out what the actual question was.

And this computer, which was called the Earth, was so large that it was frequently mistaken for a planet - especially by the strange ape-like beings who roamed its surface, totally unaware that they were simply part of a gigantic computer program. And this is very odd, because without that fairly simple and obvious piece of knowledge, nothing that ever happened on the Earth could possibly make the slightest bit of sense.

Sadly however, just before the critical moment of readout, the Earth was unexpectedly demolished by the Vogons to make way - so they claimed - for a new hyperspace bypass, and so all hope of discovering a meaning for life was lost for ever.

Or so it would seem.
Two of the strange, ape-like creatures survived

So long, and thanks for all the fish, Douglas Adams
"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.

And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.

Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.

And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be
nice to people for a change, one girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything."

herbert in dune s-a bazat pe psihologia umana.
asimov in fundatia s-a bazat pe psihologia individului, dar si a unui grup de indivizi, in dezvoltarea ideii de globalizare. cititi cartea si incercati sa faceti legatura cu sistemul politic actual.
pandora - o alta carte buna, bazata pe idei religioase
picnic la marginea drumului,
ender,

Fredric Brown (thriller, mistery)?

In treacat erau amintite si furnicile sclavagiste si lupta care o duc toate furnicile in general impotriva acestor insecte.

M-as bucura sa "traiesc virtual" intr-o astfel de comunitate science fiction. Poate ca si alti navigatori.

Cu prietenie, tuturor,
OB

Poate, poate....

Salut voios, Eyewitness!
Mishto raspuns. In alte locuri am primit statut de Invitat Special. Toate lucrurile astea vorbesc despre libertati. Fiecare e liber sa faca, sa gandeasca, sa actioneze. Unii ma iubesc nebuneste, altii m-ar spanzura de primul felinar fara prea multa vorba. OK.
