R. Hi, how are you?
S. Hi, how are you all? It's a pleasure to talk with all of you. One more time, you all know that you've been a very important part in my career and this is something I don't (or won't) forget.
R. Did you expect this great success that you had after your Pies Descalzos CD?
S. Yeah, the truth is that life has surprised me with gains and we worked a lot but of course, I have to be thankful with the people and until now, things have turned out very well. I can't complain.
R. Where have you been those last two years?
S. Well, during one year and a half, I didn't take a rest, have been working 12 hours a day, writing, producing around 60 songs, and then I decided to select 20 songs which now form "Fijación Oral". Now, we're with Fijación Oral 1 which is the baby we've just given birth to, which cost me a lot to give birth to ... hí¶hí¶hí¶
R. What are the differences between the two discs, the English and the Spanish one? What changes are there?
S. These are two discs completely different, actually each song is different. For example, "La Tortura" is a song which has regeton, a little of Jamaican Dance Hall, accordion, accoustic guitars, it's a fusion. And there are other songs of the disc which have nothing to do with "La Tortura", there are ones which are more "ballad" tuned or more "rockish" or which have a phew influence like Jazz, each song is like an entity of itself and has an own life because in one year and a half, a lot of things happen, each song is a kind of document of life. In the English disc, the songs are very different to the ones of the Spanish one.
R. You worked with Gustavo Cerati. How did you live this experience?
S. Gustavo is my total idol, for me it was a pleasure to have worked with him. Imagine, having him in my recording studio, in my house in the Bahamas and he felt very comfortable working in my house. Gustavo came to the Bahamas and I had him there playing guitar, singing and recording, I was like a fanatic in the first line, the luxury (some expression which actually means something like *yay* it was great) you can't imagine. And well, Alejandro Sanz, who stands like an invited artist, is a ... (lujaso = something even bigger than luxury ... so double yay) because he's one of the most respected composer and singer and who I also admire and is a great friend of mine. So, it turned out to be very good and very comfortable.
R. Who produced this disc?
S. The disc was produced by me and by people who helped me before, with collaborators, co-producers like Lester Mendez, Luis Fernando Ochoa with whom we made some songs, together this time, Rick Rubin, executive producer and who was like the paternal figure of the disc.
R. Why didn't you work with Emilio Estefan this time?
S. Emilio is a great friend of mine, he's like part of the family. What happened is that he was (is) very busy with the TV programme. There couldn't have been enough time for him to take care of disc, which demanded a lot of energy.
R. What do you think of "Estes Shows" (?) and people who want to become famous through those programmes?
S. Well, the important thing is that there are more opportunities, because when I started to make my first steps as a singer in Colombia, in that moment, there was already a musical place, only the tropical music had its own public, but pop music didn't have any opportunity, they didn't even make videos (of pop music), imagine that, it was very difficult and I am glad about the fact that there are more opportunities now.
R. How are you doing concerning love?
S.Everything's alright. Antonio is a marvellous man who takes care of me, protects me a lot, supports me, he's a grand partner. And we have plans for a wedding but it's all a pre-production. Imagine, invite the whole family, the cousins, the cousins 2nd degree, 3rd and 4th. We're waiting for the appropriate moment to plan it.
R. How would you like your wedding to be? barefoot on the beach?
S. Yes, I've always dreamed getting maried barefoot on the beach like you've just said, I don't know, because sometimes we want the wedding to be very simple but it's impossible with all the people we know, there will be so many people and we'll have more ennemies than friends.
R. Are you the smallest of your brothers/sisters? Are you the only one in that artistical market?
Yes, I am the smallest one. I am the only artist in my family, but the fact is that my father's whole family are musicians, my cousins play guitar, various instruments, but among my brothers/sisters, I'm the only one.
R. How do you feel about the fact that the whole world (everyone) knows you? From China to Colombia?
S. Well, it's a success/hit, I feel very proud to be able to travel around the world and share my hispanic, latin culture with the anglo world and I think there are still some pre-conceptions about the latin people. One of my biggest dreams with this Spanish album is that it would be played in Germany, France, the disc will be launched internationally, so I am illusionned about the fact that the whole world starts singing in Spanish and that they start knowing us better.
R. There was something else you wanted to tell us. A surprise? We know that you've already recorded the video ... Is Alejandro in it?
S. In my video, Alejandro appears, yes.
R. And do you both kiss each other or from distance only?
S. Hí¶hí¶hí¶... ahh, the video is quite physical hí¶hí¶.
R. Well and now, how do you have your hair? To be honest, you were looking quite hot with dark hair.
S. Do you like dark hair? The truth is that I already miss it. In a short period of time, I will give you a surprise.
R. Did you change your looking for the disc?
S. I've been putting so much mysticism in that album that I didn't have time to think about the looking. I think people will see my hair a bit curlish, blonde even though a bit de-dyed(don't know how to express that ?) and sunny from the bahamas. hí¶hí¶hí¶
R. What do you do to stay in good shape?
The truth is that I would like to make more sport than what I actually do, because I was stuck in the middle of the studio, 12 hours a day that I didn't have time to exercise and when I did it, I always felt asleep in the studio. Yes, it's difficult to combine the two things. You don't have to eat so many "flour" (?? as far as I know, harina means flour ... well, at least we know she eats more than one simple sandwich ) and those kind of things.
R. Well, congratulations, we've already been missing you!
S. And so did I miss you all. You don't know how much I want to visit all the countries of latin America, to be again in contact with my fans, with all those hugs and smiles, those ones I always get from them.
